I've been with my boyfriend for over a year now. He's the best thing that has ever happened to me. He's my best friend and I love him dearly. We've been talking about marriage lately. At first it was great talking about the future.

However, I'm starting to get scared, (committment/marriage phobia) and in turn I'm not treating him right (one minute I'm sweet and close, the next I'm civil, but distant). I don't know whether to break up with him (and perhaps lose him for good, even as a friend) or "wait it out" in hopes that it's just a phase or step.

I'm open to any suggestions. I've gotten the "sugar-coated" advice from others. I'm ready for an honest, blunt answer.

Chirl, let's talk. If you keep treating Mr. Man poorly, you won't even need my reply. His ass will raise up, feel me? Hell, kick a dog enough times and see if he won't run away. Even a dog gets tired of being treated bad.

My cyber sister has committment phobia, bless her heart! Realize that committment phobia is just another emotion, and it will pass Chirl, it will pass!

In your case/situation, committment phobia is an emotional response to this new, different, exciting situation. You're actually in LOVE with another person! You're actually thinking about sharing your life with another person! Hell yes, you're scared!

Don't let scared slip into C-R-A-Z-Y; keep that man. Wait it out. Take a mini vacation. Take a break. Do NOT listen to your well meaning, quick to tell you to dump him friends either. I don't want to see you on Jerry Springer getting your kick ass, on!

NOTE: Chirl is a combination of Chile and Girl. (Thanks E. Lynn Harris!)
